GEELONG BREAKFAST LIONS CLUB

District 201V2, Victoria, AUSTRALIA

CLUB HISTORY

The Lions Club of Geelong Breakfast was chartered on June 4, 2001 with 20 members.

In the early days, the club met at the Rosnashane Reception Centre on Aberdeen Street, Newtown. This facility has since closed.

The club then decided to cook its own meals and had the opportunity to meet at the Geelong Sailing School on Eastern Beach. This was the location of all meetings for a number of years.

In 2009 the move was made to the Grove Retirement Village in Grovedale where the meals were cooked!

10th Charter Anniversary

The 10th Annual Charter Anniversary was held on Saturday 25th June 2011, at the Cucina One 12 restaurant in Belmont.

A cosy little back room gave us plenty of privacy and a chance to mix with members old and new and a few VIPs. Stuart Pett was one of the Charter members was present with his wife Ingrid.

We had IPDG Bob Gilchrist and his wife Barb present and Bob carried out the induction of the new Board. Also present were PDG Alan Price and wife Shirley, Zone Chair Maree Konieczka and
hubby George, and Rob and Cathy Lundie, parents of the late Nicole Lundie in whose memory our club has initiated a sponsored summer scholarship at Peter Mac Cancer Clinic. Another very special guest was our original Guiding Lion John Thomsen.

We had a number of guests from other clubs as well, including Little River.

MC for the evening was Lion Alan Davis who led us through a very enjoyable evening of friendship, fine food and wine, some awards and of course the obligatory induction of incoming President Pete Johnston and Board Members.

Outgoing President Paul Austin presented 3 awards during the evening - to Peter Johnston for his persistence and perseverance in ensuring that the likes of the Bob McGovern Walk project is a success; to Judy McDonald for her continual excellent work as Secretary, and to Cheryl and Howard Timbury for their work with the Books for Kids (Childrens Charity Network) project. President Paul also surprised Lorna with some flowers for her 60th birthday!

Presidernt Paul also tabled some interesting statistics of our first decade - Kevin Flynn is the 40th Lion to join the club, there are 9 Charter Members still active in the club, we have had 116 guest speakers since inception, and we have donated $138,214.65 to worthy causes in the 10 year period.

All in all, the 38 present had a marvellous evening with some light-hearted games conducted by Tail Twister Adrian Miles.
